Our People

Maitri employs a small staff housed in the same building as the 15 patient rooms. This allows for a high degree of interaction between staff and residents in their meals, social activities and daily lives, and is the most rewarding aspect of working here. We also enjoy the friendship and dedicated services of many volunteers, including our board members. Our staff and volunteers actively participate in benefit events and resident activities. We are a tight-knit community and relish the opportunity to be professionally and personally involved with such a caring and venerated organization.

A native San Franciscan, Susan moved to Southeast Asia at the age of 5 and returned to the Bay Area as a young adult. In the early 90’s Susan began her professional career working with homeless youth in San Francisco’s Tenderloin and Polk Gulch districts. As HIV emerged and began to devastate the homeless youth community, Susan joined the Housing Department of the San Francisco AIDS Foundation where she managed a transitional residential housing program. Susan remembers attending the opening of “Maitri Hospice” here some twenty years ago. At that time the community was in desperate need of hospice care and our program offered a beautiful service model and facility which left a deep and lasting impression on her. Susan obtained her BA in Social Work in Education in 1996 from San Francisco State. She served as Director of Client Services at Project Open Hand for 12 years before her most recent experience overseeing the development of a culinary social enterprise at Episcopal Community Services.
